Answering a consumer brand's Instagram and WhatsApp messages automatically
Social DM Autoresponder
The challenge
A direct-to-consumer food brand answered every inbound Instagram and WhatsApp message by hand. The two channels ran as two separate inboxes, so the same questions — ingredients, delivery areas, stock, order status — got answered repeatedly by whoever happened to be free.
Social messaging is where buying intent surfaces for a consumer brand: someone asking whether you deliver to their area is a customer, not a support ticket. But replies only went out when a person was at a desk, and demand doesn't respect office hours.
What we built
We built an automated response pipeline spanning both channels, running on a dedicated self-hosted automation instance.
Inbound messages from Instagram and WhatsApp land in a single pipeline rather than two disconnected inboxes, so the brand has one place where customer conversation happens. Messages are answered automatically, without waiting for someone to be available.
Running the instance on the brand's own dedicated infrastructure — rather than a shared third-party inbox product — keeps customer message content inside systems the brand controls, which matters for a business handling consumer contact details and order queries.
What was delivered
- Shipped and running in production across both Instagram and WhatsApp
- Two separate inboxes consolidated into a single automated pipeline
- Replies sent automatically rather than depending on staff availability
- Deployed on a dedicated self-hosted instance, keeping customer message content in the brand's own infrastructure
Every figure above is taken from the delivered system itself. Where we don't have a client-verified business outcome, we report what was built and measured rather than estimating an improvement.
Tech stack
- n8n (self-hosted)
- Instagram Messaging API
